Active vs. passive PA: which is right for you?
The single decision that shapes your whole rig — and why most modern systems have already made it for you.
A passive speaker needs an external amplifier and processing; an active (powered) speaker has both built in. The difference isn't just convenience — it's how predictable your system sounds.
Why active wins for most events
With an active box, the amplifier and DSP are matched to the drivers at the factory. That means correct crossover points, phase-aligned outputs and driver protection every time you power up — no guesswork, no mismatched amp racks. You run a signal cable and mains, and you're playing. Every TSF system — the W-110BP, CV-152MP and W-181BP — is fully active with onboard DSP for exactly this reason.
When passive still makes sense
Large touring rigs with centralised amp/DSP racks sometimes prefer passive boxes for weight distribution and serviceability. For clubs, houses of worship, corporate events and most live bands, active is faster to deploy and more consistent.
